yea.. as the title suggests.. i'm looking for a few car model (tuners basically) to work on, but don't know where to start off. Designing one is not really an option here, so i'm looking for basically free 3d models. Also i would like to know how to make use of those free models available down at google 3d warehouse. though they are in kmz or collada or whatever, is there any way to make them metasequoia friendly/pepakura friendly?

Hi. At sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=car+models&btnG=Pesquisar&styp=m&reps=2you can get many models from Googgle Sketcup colections. To import to Metasequoia you must have the Google SketchUP installed in your computer, to save the files in .lwo, .3ds or .obj format. Then you can open then in Metasequoia and save like .mqo files. But I think these models are very complex to unfold directly in Pepakura. First you must reduce faces to obtain good unfolded models. Hi. Thanks for your reply igoraf. Yea they are pretty complex... thats y i would like to work on those in metasequoia which are tagged 'Low poly' Besides, these models are free, so no harm in trying!
P.S: Which version of sketchup? the free one or the 8 hour trial one? 8 hour trial version supports exporting in different formats, but i guess the free one doesn't.

Yes, only the "full" version (8 hours trial version) can export in other formats. I think this period is valid only if you change or create something in the files. Export function doesn't mean changes, so the trial period will never expire. I have the pro version 6 and it's working fine, but I don't know if a newer version works like this.

glad to hear you can help! well basically, i was just looking to make model by using those available on google 3d warehouse. Thanks to igoraf i downloaded Google sketchup pro trial version ( a whopping 52.5 mb) ad exported a mazda rx8 available at google 3d warehouse. Though it hasn't been through metasequoia, it is okay for a little pepakura work that i'm currently working (my aim for modeling is currently experimental). However, i would like to share the model with you or any1else if they can help. I guess you have my email in msn... i'll contact you through that....ok?

as mentioned above, i was working on a mazda rx8 which was taken from google 3dwarehouse. I forgot to mention that any model down at the google 3dwarehouse has like over 150 meshes! each part is stored as a mesh hence the numbers are so high. Also i find this odd that each part yet has two meshes, but one part includes the faces but the other part is just the frame of the part. The faces part can be easily edited in pepakura, but it takes an awful lot of time to find out which is the face and which is the frame. Anyways, my mazda rx8 (only experimental yet) is almost over in design.. will release pics soon...

As you can see, this is the rx8 i was talking about. It has around 52617 polygonal surfaces ( yes i know they're huge and it made my pc lag) but some how i managed to make it a little more human friendly) though it looks like a car with a 'net' over it due to many parts. During the transition, i lost a few faces like one light though i'm sure a bit of photoshop editing should do the trick. i've already started building it (not to scale but final assembly size will be around 17.2 cm). will update as soon as possible.. but don't get excited.. you wont see this done soon.. its going to take some time. good work danyial, i think, the most important part of a car is front bumper, you hav to work on it a lot. you must do less parts as you can so use ' join surface ' well.

yeah that is a lot of parts, do what egen suggests, join surface and that will allow for a smaller page count

Hi, Yea! you guys are right. Thanks for the tip. However, in this specific model, when i join the surfaces to reduce the parts, i notice a bit of broken lines or 'gaps', or such that the model is has to be cut...its like it hasn't joined properly though its faces show that they are joined. That accounts for 0.5 to 1mm gaps which in turn appear the more i try to join the more parts. So suppose in total, there are 'gaps' of 3-4 mm in one part, that causes for physical construction errors as the gaps are pretty small and also 'appear' to be joined. i'll show in pictures later Because my school is about open and since this will be my first school in Australia, i'll have less time on the model.i'll try to complete this as soon as possible. I'll show the errors here: This is a part of the hood. As reported it is in many parts. The red circles show where the 'breaks' or 'gaps' are even before i join the main bigger pieces. As suggested, i join the parts, and now you can see the break. This i suppose is around 0.5 - 1mm big. Now the other 3 gaps, including this almost add up to 2mm. I haven't tried but theoretically, this will cause problems in construction. How ever, rickstef and egen, you guys are professional modelers so u guys should suggest what i can do. Another example of the breaks below: Hmm... Confusing isn't it? any suggestions? i guess its because of the highly detailed model ( not sure but over 20,000 faces). Lets see whats in store for us. I've stared building it as a eta build and yes i have run into problems but you can say its fairly okay. Will post pics soon ( thanks to flickr for pic hosting P.S: Sorry for such long posts. One more question. I have the tires in a separate file (.pdo) Since i tweaked the development size of the model.. i'm not sure how to match the size of the tire with the model's body. Can anyone tell me how to match the size??

It's very simple. Open the body file and take a note of the "scale factor" value at 2DPatternWindow -> Scale Up/Down Development by Specifying Value.. menu. Then open the tire's file and do the same. In my experience, this second value should be different. So, you can change it, typing the same value from body file in the proper box. Now, all the parts are in the same scale.
