Hi,
This is a good question - I would also like to know what the best software is to make car models the same quality as the beautiful 1/14 Dodge Daytona in the Gallery section.
At the moment I use the spline modeling feature of Hash AnimationMaster together w/ Pepakura, but it has been a REAL LONG process and I am only now getting to the point where the mesh / models will unfold correctly.
This is also just the modeling feature - I still need the graphics part. I have Coreldraw 10, but I guess this will be a whole other learning curve.
At the moment I have 4 models in the works (all 1/14 scale):-
Hillman Imp (Brit 60s saloon - Rally) Hillman Hunter GT (1968 - London - Sydney Marathon) Ford Cortina 1600E (1969) Ford Cortina 1600 GT 1968-69 (Rally) Dodge Charger (1968 - Bullitt)
The 1/14 Daytona really is a good example of the quality I would like to aim for.

You can use Metasequoia, AutoCAD, Milkshape, Rhino, 3D Studio Max, Zmodeller, Google Sketchup (you'll need a plugin to unfold) etc. Choose one, learn about it and you will make great models. I use Metasequoia because it's easy to use and, of course, I started and learned the enough to make my models. Besides, MQO files are fully compatible with Pepakura, the software that 9 in 10 modelers use to unfold models. Regards, Igor

I just found this site today, even though I've been doing paper cars for 3 1/2 years, so I guess I'll post a brief summary of my experience with programs.
I've been building my models with CorelDraw (latest version is X3 or 13), since I already knew how to work with it because I'm a graphic designer, and Corel provided me all the necessary tools to trace the original images. Normally I don't start with a 3D model (didn`t know about Pepakura), instead I work with basic pictures from the cars (views from the side, front, rear, and sometimes if I get lucky from top and bottom). Normally that's all I need to develop the model, but once in a while I don't get all the required views, so that means I must use a little "imagination" to fill in the details, and sometimes I fix the pictures in Photoshop just to remove backgrounds or to stitch-up images from various sources to get the right view for tracing.
Corel already has some built-in tracing features for bitmaps, but I prefer to do all the work to get more details in the models even thoug they are normally printed very small (around a 1:40 scale) , so most of the details can't bee seen in the final product. By the way, the cars I build are all from Chrysler, Dodge & Jeep models, since they appear in the official Chrysler magazine in Mexico, so they are not exactly racing cars, but I've done exciting cars like the Charger Daytona and right now I'm working on the Crossfire.
Got to go now. If anyone wants to hear more of my experiences just let me know.
